Can bleached coral recover?

Bleached coral is not necessarily dead. Whether it recovers depends on how hot the water gets—and how long the stress lasts.

A partnership under stress

Photosynthetic symbionts provide coral hosts with energy while receiving shelter and nutrients. Heat and bright light can disrupt photosynthesis and generate cellular stress. Corals then lose symbionts, pigments or both.

Why some corals fare better

Species, colony history, local water flow, symbiont type and prior exposure shape response. Shading, deeper water or temporary cooling can create refuges. Those differences matter, but they do not eliminate risk from repeated widespread heat.

Local action and global heat

Improving water quality and reducing direct damage can increase recovery capacity. The thermal driver of mass bleaching ultimately requires limiting greenhouse-gas warming. Restoration can support sites, but it cannot replace suitable ocean conditions.
