Water in, food retained
A whale shark opens its broad terminal mouth and brings in prey-rich water. Filtering pads associated with the gill arches retain particles while water exits through the gill slits. The shark then swallows the concentrated material. The system is not baleen: whale sharks are fish with gills and a distinct filtering anatomy.
Two feeding behaviors
During ram filtration, the shark moves forward with its mouth open. During suction feeding, it can repeatedly open and close the mouth to pull water in, sometimes while holding a steep or nearly vertical position beneath a dense patch of food. That flexibility distinguishes it from basking sharks, which rely more heavily on continuous forward flow.
Following ocean events
Whale sharks gather where currents, spawning or productivity concentrate food—fish eggs, copepods, krill and small schooling animals. Those aggregations can be seasonal and highly local. The sharks are not randomly grazing an empty sea; they are finding temporary hotspots rich enough to support a gigantic body.
Big body, small prey
Filter feeding works when small prey arrive in enormous numbers and can be processed with relatively low handling cost. Large size can improve travel efficiency and energy storage between patchy meals. It also misleads observers who expect a large mouth to contain large, dangerous teeth: whale shark dentition is tiny and the species is not a predator of people.
