Two ways to move water
Shark gills extract dissolved oxygen only when water passes over their delicate respiratory surfaces. Buccal pumpers actively expand the mouth and pharynx, pulling water in and sending it across the gills while the animal is sitting on the bottom or moving slowly. Ram ventilators use forward speed to create that flow. These are not two rigid boxes: some species can switch or combine the methods as activity and oxygen demand change.
Who can stop
Nurse sharks, wobbegongs and many bottom-associated sharks are conspicuous resters. Spiracles—small openings behind the eyes in some species—can also help draw water when the mouth is near sand. A resting shark is therefore not necessarily sick or suffocating. Calm posture, normal gill movement and species identity matter more than whether the tail is moving.
Who keeps moving
Fast, open-water sharks such as shortfin makos and white sharks are built around continuous cruising and high oxygen demand. Smithsonian Ocean identifies white, mako and whale sharks among species that must keep swimming to maintain flow. Even here, the useful scientific point is dependence on ram ventilation—not a dramatic stopwatch that applies identically in every circumstance.
Why the myth lasts
A memorable statement about nonstop motion is easier to repeat than a lesson in respiratory physiology. It also happens to describe several famous species. Generalizing from those celebrities erases the diversity of more than 500 living sharks, from carpet sharks resting on reefs to lanternsharks moving through the deep sea.
