In the documented encounters, orcas had the advantage. That does not mean every orca hunts sharks—or that every meeting ends the same way. It means the best direct evidence shows some orcas can kill white sharks and alter where those sharks choose to stay.
What was actually seen?
In May 2022, researchers recorded killer whales pursuing and killing white sharks in Mossel Bay, South Africa. The event lasted about 71 minutes. At least two white sharks—and possibly a third—were killed. One killer whale was filmed consuming a shark’s liver.
That matters because direct observations of this behavior are rare. It turns a long-suspected interaction into documented evidence. It does not turn the encounter into a universal rule for two entire species.
Why can the orca win?
Orcas are large, social toothed whales with flexible hunting strategies. Some populations coordinate attacks and pass specialized techniques between individuals. White sharks are formidable ambush predators, but their strengths evolved for hunting their own prey—not for a contest with coordinated cetaceans.
The strongest conclusion is behavioral: certain orcas have learned how to target sharks efficiently. “Orcas always beat white sharks” would go beyond the evidence.
The encounter changes the map
Researchers have also connected killer-whale presence with periods when white sharks disappeared from familiar South African aggregation sites. A top predator does not need to kill every rival to reshape an ecosystem. The risk itself can change movement.
That ripple may affect prey and competing predators too. Scientists are still working out how much of each local shift comes from orcas, fishing pressure, changing prey and other environmental forces.
