The fossil line ends
Megalodon is known chiefly from large teeth and vertebral remains. Statistical analyses of the youngest credible occurrences place its extinction near the end of the Pliocene, and the Smithsonian summarizes the date at about 3.6 million years ago. Reworked fossils can wash into younger sediments, so location alone is not proof of a later survivor.
The trench-refuge problem
Fiction often moves megalodon into a deep, isolated trench. Fossils and ecological reconstruction instead connect it with productive warm waters and marine-mammal prey, including coastal nursery areas. A giant active predator would need a large energy supply and a breeding population; the hadal deep sea does not resemble a concealed version of its known habitat.
Big animals leave big traces
A surviving population would shed enormous teeth throughout life, bite whales, produce environmental DNA, wash up occasionally and appear in modern fisheries, sonar or camera records. One animal would not preserve a species indefinitely, so the claim requires many breeding individuals. The absence of all those independent signals is powerful evidence.
What may have ended it
Ocean cooling, changing circulation, prey shifts and competition have all been investigated. Extinction rarely reduces to one cinematic cause, and timing estimates continue to be refined. That uncertainty concerns why and exactly when the species disappeared—not whether a secret modern population has been demonstrated.
